Our Community
At the Old Railway Line Garden Centre, we take pride in actively supporting our local community in various ways. We believe that giving back to the community is an essential part of being a responsible business.
One way we demonstrate our commitment to the community is by organizing and participating in fundraising events for local and national charities. We believe that supporting charities is a crucial way to make a positive impact on our society and help those in need.
We are also passionate about inspiring younger generations to take an interest in gardening. Gardening is not only a fun and rewarding hobby, but it can also teach valuable skills such as responsibility, patience, and care for the environment. We offer workshops, educational events, and hands-on activities for children to encourage their interest in gardening and help them learn more about the natural world.
In addition to these initiatives, we strive to be an environmentally responsible business, taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint and minimize our impact on the environment. We also support local businesses by sourcing our products from local suppliers whenever possible.
We are proud of our community work and remain committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those around us. If you want to learn more about our initiatives or get involved, we encourage you to visit us at the Old Railway Line Garden Centre.
Our Local Community & Schools
Encouraging Young Gardeners
We are passionate about sharing our love of gardening with the next generation. We believe that introducing children to the wonders of nature and helping them develop a green thumb at an early age can have a positive impact on their lives for years to come.
We welcome groups of children on school trips to our garden centre, where they can learn about the basics of growing plants, and observe the variety of plants we have on display. Our experienced staff members provide informative tours, sharing their knowledge about different plants and how to care for them, inspiring the children to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
Supporting Schools
We want so share the benefits of gardening with as many people as possible. As a result, we also offer support to local school gardening projects by providing advice, plants, and equipment. We understand that many schools have limited resources and budgets, we do our best to help by providing guidance on the best practices for setting up and maintaining a school garden, as well as donating plants and equipment where possible.
We are proud to have contributed to the development of many school gardens over the years, and we will continue to support this initiative as part of our commitment to our community and the environment.
Our Charities
At the heart of our business lies a strong commitment to giving back to our community and supporting a diverse range of local and national charities. Some of the charities we support include Greenfingers, Macmillan, Mind, and Ty Hafan. These organizations each play a vital role in our community, providing essential services and support to those in need.
Throughout the year, we organize various fundraising events to raise funds for our chosen charities. These events include fun days, quiz and curry nights, and sponsored challenges.
Each year, we select a specific charity to support as our “Charity of the Year.” This allows us to focus our fundraising efforts on a particular organization and make a more significant impact on its operations. Our chosen charity of the year is always one that we feel passionate about and that aligns with our values as a business.
Cultivation Street
Cultivation Street, founded by David Domoney, is a campaign that encourages gardening and community involvement. It aims to bring pride and beauty back to Britain’s streets by creating a network of community gardens, schools and garden centres.
This campaign offers support to organizations by providing advice, resources, and connections. Garden Centres are an integral part of Cultivation Street, and the Garden Centre Scheme was launched to provide quality gardening advice and recommendations for community groups and schools.
Matthew, our Events Manager, is a proud ambassador for Cultivation Street and has won Ambassador of the Year on several occasions! Our knowledgeable staff are available 7 days a week to provide you with any assistance and guidance you require. If you wish to participate and need more information, do not hesitate to approach us. We are always happy to help!
Our Commitment to the Environment
Our Wildlife
With the increasing number of new constructions and changing landscapes, natural nesting sites for bats and birds are gradually declining. We have installed several bat and bird nesting boxes in various suitable locations around our garden centre, creating potential nesting sites for the birds. Our efforts have already attracted several resident birds, including robins and blackbirds, who frequently visit and nest in some of the more out-of-the-way corners of the garden centre.
Our Hedgerows & Borders
The beautiful hedgerows of Wales are vanishing from the landscape, taking with them an abundance of native wildlife. These rich habitats are home to hundreds of species and provide a beautiful view for all. In order to support the “Keep Wales Tidy” community hedgerow project, we at the garden centre have volunteered to help maintain and improve hedgerows. In addition, we have several beds, borders, and native trees located along the roadside and in our car park which we take great care of all year round.
