Well here we are at the end of an August which just seems to have flown by. It is a time for harvesting and perhaps storing produce from the vegetable and fruit beds and, as the days shorten, to watch out for the first signs of the rich autumn colours to come.

As all our thoughts begin to turn to August I can’t help thinking what a July we have had. Some much needed rain in the first part of the month followed by the gloriously hot, sunny and dry spell- too hot for some, I think.

Well here we are in July with already half the year gone and our gardens hopefully in their high-summer colours and scents. There is still lots of garden work to be done in July but with the long summer evenings we can enjoy all that the garden has to offer.

My month by month RHS book tells me that June is the month when the garden hits its peak as borders look perfect and the summer vegetables and soft fruit are flourishing. If only this was true for all our gardens but at least it is something to aim for.
