My RHS ‘Gardening Through the Year ‘ book tells me that November can be a damp, raw month which, I admit, is not a great way to begin this month’s blog. However, even in November although flowers may be scarce there are still the last days of this year’s autumn leaves, many colourful fruits, and evergreen foliage as well as decorative stems and barks to bring interest to the garden even on the dullest of days.

My RHS book on ‘Gardening through the Year’ tells me that September is a wonderful month and I whole-heartedly agree. True the shortening of the days are a sign that the year is moving on but there is so much to admire and enjoy in the first month of the autumn.

Well after an unusually wet and cool July following last July’s hot and dry weather I wonder what August has in store for us? In some ways the unpredictability of our wonderful British weather makes gardening even more interesting, some would say challenging, and keeps gardeners on their toes at all times!

Here we are into July already and the second half of the year which means mid-summer and all the colours and scents which our summer flowers bring, especially the wonderful roses and sweet peas. Your gardens are probably at or near their best at this time of year and all your hard work has paid off.

I think that most of you are already aware that June is right up there in my list of favourite months. Over the spring months the garden has literally blossomed week by week and by June the leaf greens are still vibrant and fresh and largely undamaged by pests, disease or drought.
