My books tell me that on sunny days gardening in December can be a pleasant experience which is true but as I look out today in the early afternoon all I can see is a much more gloomy prospect!

As we leave a glorious September behind, apart from the last week or so!, and enter into the main part of autumn it is the time to admire the sometimes all too brief show of wonderful colours before the leaves start to fall and flowers finally begin to fade.

Shrubs can offer so much to the garden coming as they do in all shapes, habits and sizes. In the end I have reduced an enormous list down to a top 12 which I wouldn’t want to be without.

How the garden changes in just a month! The much needed rain in June has given plants a real boost of growth although the wind at times seemed to want to lay all that growth on the ground!
