May Gardening Tips 2022
Flower Garden
- Support perennials before they get too large
- Divide clumps of polyanthus and primroses after flowering.
- Continue deadheading and feeding spring flowering bulbs leaving the foliage to die down naturally.
- Tie in growth of climbers and wall shrubs.
- Plant out and train sweet peas.
- Continue to plant container grown plants.
Kitchen Garden
- Water the vegetable patch regularly in dry weather.
- Sow crops of Swede, winter cabbage/cauliflower, lettuce, maincrop carrots, peas and beans.
- Plant frost tender vegetables, eg. runner beans, once risk of frost has passed.
- Water soft fruit bushes and newly planted trees.
- Protect strawberries from the birds.
- Continue to plant container grown soft fruit and fruit trees.
Greenhouse
- Ventilate the greenhouse well and water plants more frequently.
- Apply shading to greenhouse.
- Continue to prick out and pot on seedlings, cuttings and young plants.
- Continue to harden off bedding plants by standing them out in the day and returning them to the greenhouse at night or by transferring to a cold frame.
The Lawn
- Feed established lawns if you didn’t get chance in April.
- Remove weeds.
- Mow lawns weekly.
General Advice
- Check all garden plants for watering on a regular basis.
- Remove unwelcome plants from the ponds.
- Introduce new fish to the pond and continue to feed fish.
- From the middle of the month plant bedding plants in pots, baskets and borders.
- Keep on top of weeding and hoeing.
- Keep an eye out for any pests and deal with them straight away.
