Finding Hay: A Journey up Broad Street presents an intimate portrait of one of Hay-on-Wye’s most iconic streets, once a simple country lane that grew into the bustling marketplace of the Norman castle-town of La Haye. Rosie Hayles, drawing on years of research and her personal experience running a bookshop on Broad Street, guides readers through a rich tapestry of everyday life from medieval times to the late 20th century.

The book is beautifully illustrated with a blend of historic and recent colour photographs, prints, paintings, and maps that bring the street’s story to life. It highlights an eclectic mix of characters — from medieval traders and artisans to modern bookshop owners — revealing the street’s evolving social fabric within the broader history of Hay-on-Wye, the famed borderland booktown.

This engaging and detailed narrative offers valuable insights for local history enthusiasts, visitors interested in Hay’s unique cultural heritage, and anyone curious about the development of market towns in the Welsh Marches.
