A Brush with the Borders: An Artist’s Year is a rich and reflective visual diary by acclaimed artist Kathryn Moore, created during her year-long residency at Hergest Croft Gardens on the Welsh Border. This hardback volume takes readers on a month-by-month journey through the seasons, blending observational watercolours, pencil sketches, and handwritten reflections that capture both the natural detail and emotional atmosphere of the gardens.
From January’s stark lines to the abundant colours of late summer, each chapter provides a multi-layered view of the evolving landscape, enriched by insights from gardeners, historical context, references to literature, and moments of quiet observation. The book’s final section features 25 completed artworks, demonstrating how Moore’s initial sketches were developed into finished pieces.
Kathryn Moore, a Herefordshire-based painter with an international exhibiting background, brings a sense of place and artistic sensitivity that resonates throughout. Whether read as a personal artistic journey, used for creative inspiration, or appreciated as a celebration of British garden life, A Brush with the Borders is both timely and timeless—an ode to art, nature, and seasonal transformation.
