Gardening Tips from Real Gardeners | National Gardening Week UK

Celebrate National Gardening Week with Community Advice

For National Gardening Week (27th April – 3rd May 2026), we’re sharing something a little special at The Old Railway Line Garden Centre.

At The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, we believe gardening is something to be shared. Not just plants and tools, but ideas, experiments, little wins… and even the occasional failure that teaches us something new.

Last year, our Tree of Knowledge blossomed in the garden sundries area. Customers pinned their favourite tips onto its branches, creating something rather special, a living library of gardening wisdom, grown right here in our community.

This National Gardening Week, we’re revisiting those leaves… and sharing some of our favourites. 🌱

🌼 Little Tricks That Make a Big Difference

Sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that save a plant (or your sanity):

  • “Avoid overwatering – a slight wilt is better than rotting! 😊”
  • “Label your seeds as you sow them! It is easy to forget what they are…”
  • “Use tepid water on your seedlings. Cold water will shock them!!”
  • “Remember to water.”

A gentle reminder that gardening isn’t about perfection, it’s about paying attention.

🌱 Growing Smarter, Not Harder

A few clever techniques shared by fellow gardeners:

  • “Soak your sweet peas before you sow them to aid germination.”
  • “Soak ranunculus corms and dahlia tubers before planting.”
  • “My best buy was a mini windowsill propagator. Now all my veg is grown from seed.”
  • “Use your greenhouse to stand containers of rain water to water new plants and seeds.”

Small tweaks. Stronger plants. Better results.

🐌 Natural Ways to Tackle Pests

When it comes to pests, our customers lean towards natural solutions:

  • “Beer is a cheap, chemical free slug trap bait.”
  • “Crushed up egg shells will deter slugs… Slugs don’t like sharp or slippery.”
  • “Try lining the plant pot with Vaseline.”
  • “Fungus gnats? I use nematodes mixed with water to deal with them naturally.”
  • “Plant Marigolds with Carrots to keep away carrot fly.”

Proof that a little creativity can go a long way in the garden.

🌸 Helping Plants Thrive

A few tips for giving your plants that extra boost:

  • “Drop a raw egg into the hole before planting your tomatoes… Use shells as slug repellent.”
  • “Take cuttings from your favourite roses so you never lose them.”
  • “If your hanging baskets are about to die, soak them overnight… they will bounce right back!”

It’s all about giving plants the best possible start… and a second chance when they need it.

🌿 Gardening for the Soul

Not every tip is about growing plants. Some are about growing something else entirely:

  • “Remember to sit and enjoy your garden! <3”
  • “Healthy garden, healthy soul.”
  • “Take care of your garden, and your garden will take care of you!”
  • “Talk and sing to them.”
  • “Encourage children to garden more…” – Ruby, age 9
  • “It doesn’t matter how small your outdoor space is, it can be plentiful!”

And perhaps the most honest advice of all:

  • “Enjoy a glass of prosecco whilst gardening!”
  • “Make time to stop and enjoy your garden. Drink gin!”
  • “Marry someone who loves plants & growing as much as you do.”

We couldn’t agree more.

💚 A Garden Grown Together

One of our favourite leaves simply read:

“Y ganolfan arddio orau yng Nghymru!”
(The best garden centre in Wales!)

We’ll let that one speak for itself. 😊

🌼 Share Your Wisdom

Gardening is always evolving, and there’s always something new to learn.

If you have a tip, trick, or bit of advice to share, we’d love to hear it. Next time you visit, keep an eye out… our Tree of Knowledge might just bloom again. 🌿
